Health Care During the Great Depression

By: Lillian L.

During the Great Depression, when a great many people were living in conditions that could not have been imagined a few years before, obtaining healthcare was a luxury few could afford. Despite this fact, and contrary to what one might expect, people actually lived longer during that time period. With the exception of suicide, all other major causes of death researched were on the decline during the depression and increased again when the economy picked up. Some feel the decrease may be due to people working fewer hours since there were so few jobs and also possibly due to the fact that factories were creating less pollution.
